Our Mission: 'To make our industry quieter, safer and greener'
The FPSO operates approximately 241 kilometres (150 miles) northeast of the Shetland Islands, with an average peak production of 45,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
Cullum was engaged by Solar Turbines who were supplying their Titan 130 Compressor Set to the FPSO, to provide an exhaust system with high performance silencing, and suitable for the life safety plan.
Problem
Gas Turbine Exhaust Ducting and Silencing is a standard product offering from Cullum, the goal is to get the exhaust gases safety from the turbine exhaust outlet to the exterior of the FPSO.
The reason why Solar Turbines partnered with Cullum to deliver this system was the enhanced safety required, as the ducting ran through several “hazardous area zones” where casing temperature could cause auto-ignition of the surrounding atmosphere.
Hence, a robust proven “cold-case” ducting (including silencer) design was required – No small feat since the exhaust flow temperature is approximately 550oC.
Solution
Cullum designed and manufactured an exhaust system which complied with European “ATEX” standards to prevent auto-ignition in “Zone 2” hazardous areas.
This included the silencer section to provide attenuation in line with customer requirements, 85dB(A) at 3ft at all deck locations.
The unique challenge with this project was the inclusion emissions monitoring ports whilst maintaining ATEX compliance. Having removable access to the gas flow, which does not compromise the external temperature of the ducting was a challenge which our design team overcame with a clever bespoke part, which can now be incorporated in all future design, if required.
