Craft Apprentices are employed directly by the Production Department. Apprenticeship training is focused within a Shop Floor environment and it is expected that at the end of the apprenticeship, likely employment opportunities, would be based within a workshop environment. Craft Apprentices are destined to attain a career in a hands on practical environment.

Technical Apprentices are employed by the wider organisation. Basic training is attained within a Shop Floor environment but placements will also be completed within the wider office environment. It is expected that at the end of the apprenticeship any employment opportunities are likely to be based within the offices. Technical Apprentices are destined to attain a career in a theoretical disciplines such as our Drawing, Design, Projects, Procurement, Quality and Applications Teams.

  • Assist Shop Floor Employees in the smooth running of jobs through the department.
  • Work towards qualifications in manufacturing engineering.
  • To gain a wide range of experience, knowledge and skills in all processes required to deliver the Cullum product to develop a highly skilled engineer for our future business. 
  • Develop individual Leadership skills useful for the business future
  • Become an integral part of the shop floor team for now and the future.


  • To carry out instructions from the Production Manager, Senior Production Engineer, Works Manager and Team Leaders in all aspects of the role.
  • To produce a consistently high standard of work, meeting the targets and deadlines set by manager and relevant training facilitators.
  • To identify and where possible, offer solutions to training issues and procedures.
  • Under instruction and within training guidelines, operate/train in the use of Cullum machinery/equipment in order to gain a good knowledge of machine capacities and metal working techniques.
  • Learn and develop welding techniques and skills with a view to securing qualification in this discipline.
  • Learn and develop plating skills and increase knowledge and understanding of fabrication processes.
  • General labouring duties around the shop floor including fettling/cleaning fabricated items and sweeping up when necessary.


  • Lead by example on matters of HS&E, welfare and codes of conduct. 
  • Identify and suggest areas of improvement within the apprentice training programme
  • Work under own initiative.
  • Work to attain optimum performance within the Production Department and associated areas of responsibility.
  • Ensure that the Production Manager and Team Leader are informed of major developments and/or problems relating to training and development.

  • Promote and represent Cullum when required, setting a good personal example at all times.
  • Take all possible and reasonable steps to create a harmonious working environment using effective communication and team working techniques.
  • Be aware of, and adhere to, Cullum current policies and procedures including but not limited to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and the Staff Handbook.
  • Undertake duties as may be required within capabilities consistent with the Terms and Conditions of employment and responsibilities in accordance with UK and EC Laws.
  • Undertake tasks and responsibilities assigned by the line manager.


  • GCSE Grade C or equivalent in Maths and English


  • Formal evidence of previous engineering training


  • Experience in an engineering shop floor environment


  • Commitment to continued professional development in conjunction with the Company Vision Statement, Departmental Mission Statements, Cullum Competency Framework, recognised professional standards and the changing requirements of the organisation.
