The purpose of the role is to undertake the front end engineering/concept design and proposal generation for the assigned account and for projects allocated to the Applications Engineer.  The activities shall be aligned to ensure that the overall business objectives are met (secure profitable contracts) and ensure positive customer relationships are maintained for the benefit of the company.  This will include:

  • Ensuring that you provide the necessary services and support that the Project Managers require in order that Cullum can excel as a Project Centric organisation; delivering compliant projects on time, to budget, in a way that satisfies our customers whilst ensuring the sustainability and growth of the business.
  • Providing a technical engineering and proposal support service to new and existing customers in order to secure profitable contracts.
  • Providing front end engineering concept designs and technical support; producing concept designs, general arrangement drawings & sketches, calculations, costings and proposals in a timely and cost effective manner to meet our customer’s requirements.
  • Creating, developing and maintaining positive customer relationships and partnerships, both internally and externally.
  • Taking the technical lead for proposals and being directly involved with product development and product improvement.


  • Work in accordance with the Sales Procedures and Gated Sales Process.
  • Be responsible for the Frontend Engineering/Concept Design for appointed customers and projects.
  • Be the Engineering/Design point of contact for appointed customers and projects; capture and interpret project/customer requirements and promote the benefits of Cullum solutions.
  • Work closely with the Sales Lead to plan activities and agree responsibilities, ensuring that customer expectations are met, whilst managing business risk.
  • Manage enquiry specifications received from customers, their revisions and ensure that all comments and exceptions are logged and agreements with clients are agreed in writing.
  • Working with the Sales Lead, qualify all opportunities that are received and manage them through the enquiry cycle, from initial enquiry to contract award.
  • Working with the Sales Lead, track Project Enquiries with the customer through the enquiry cycle.
  • Understand the customer requirements and managing the risks to the business:
  • Clarify technical specifications and requirements
  • Confirm scope of supply and delivery requirements and terms
  • Resolve any specification conflicts
  • Understand the technical and commercial risk of a Project and maintain a risk register
  • Manage Customer Delivery Schedules and develop Preliminary  Project Plans
  • Working with the Sales Lead establish terms and conditions early in a project
  • Working with the Sales Lead define payment schedules and terms and their impact on cash flow
  • Produce concept designs and calculations for our range of noise control, filtration & emission reduction products, where relevant considering structural, air flow dynamics, acoustic and logistical aspects of the design.
  • Prepare documents, general arrangement drawings and sketches to effectively communicate and capture the equipment required to meet the customer’s needs, such that the costs can be estimated.
  • Co-ordinate the production of internal and external estimates for the proposed design solution, including the production of equipment specifications.
  • Work with the Sales Lead to produce financial cost models of the proposed customer solution/s for approval.
  • Produce detailed proposal documents and general arrangement drawings to effectively communicate the solution, managing the scope of supply, compliance and project risk and highlighting the benefits offered by Cullum.
  • Support & contribute to product improvement & development initiatives including continuous improvement.
  • Provide effective communication with internal & external customers to assist in securing profitable contracts, whilst managing business risk.
  • Work closely with & support other departments in the Company to ensure that the customer’s and the Company’s requirements and expectations are met.
  • Where required undertake customer visits and subsequent reporting, that include UK and overseas visits.
  • Create and maintain long term relationships with our customers to support and develop the business.
  • Ensure projects are effectively handed over and ensure support is provided to ensure that the projects are successfully delivered.
  • Complete clear notes and packages of technical & commercial information to ensure effective handover from the point of Sales to the Project Execution Team.
  • All activities must be completed in a timely and effective manner to meet the deadlines set by our customer and the Company.


  • The post Holder must work to attain optimum performance in service and delivery within their area of responsibility.
  • The work is varied, may be complex and will involve changing rapidly from one task to another during the working day, often under pressure.
  • Will be required to communicate with other services and outside organisations at all levels.
  • Will be required to work individually and as part of a team to achieve tight deadlines, using your own initiative.  On occasion there may be a requirement to supervise staff.
  • You will be required to seek the advice of the Sales Leader or appropriate Director on difficult or contentious matters.


  • Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Qualification to HND level or equivalent.



  • Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Qualification to Degree level or equivalent.


  • A minimum of 5 years experience of working in a technical engineering position.
  • Personal experience of working in an Engineering or Manufacturing business.
  • Proven track record of success.



  • Experience of working in similar Engineering or Manufacturing business related to gas turbines.
  • Experience of working in similar Engineering or Manufacturing business related to noise control or air filtration products.
